2 young vendors working in a local market dream of bigger things, but everything must stop eight times a day to pull down the canopy and make way for passing trains.

Penappa wants only to return to Bangkok. Arthid wants to leave his fruit stall behind and become an actor. But change is hard to come by in their market, where the vendors have grown accustomed to their unusual routine -- eight times daily, they must abruptly halt business and pull in the market's low canopy to give way to the passing train…

Filmed in and around the famous Maeklong market in Samut Songkhram, Thailand, the short film features a surprising synthesis of documentary and narrative fiction to portray a slice of life in this extraordinary setting.

Sponsored by the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand (Film Expo Asia 2010), and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

“its greatest feature; it is suffused with colour, saturated, possessed of a tremendous sense of place - not just Maeklong, but Thailand...a well judged spectacle - consider it a postcard of sorts - a bright picture, a brief sentiment, a pleasant moment, and away.”
-Andrew Robertson,
Eye for Film, Glasgow.

Title Box Toggler Block
In the year 2013, film director Bessem Labidi tries to revive his pet project - nicknamed the "Colony Project" because of its many past failed divergent incarnations. What began in 2007 as a social documentary on immigrant lives in the US, morphed into a doomed personal obsession with an Armenian-American subject he encountered, lived with, and fell for. With new Spanish funding, it was briefly resuscitated as a melodrama about two newly immigrant Colombian sisters in Philadelphia, then abandoned fully during the crash of the US economy. Now with fresh international partners, and on new emotional terrain, he finds the courage to reimagine his beloved "Colony Project" in a high concept, low-budget science-fiction setting.. more

In Bessem's new film, a small band of outsiders relinquish their citizenship on Earth to colonize a recently discovered planet, but unforeseen climate conditions prevent them from landing in their new home. The stranded migrants are divided - some wish to return to Earth, yet others have already adapted to life away from the motherland, determined to start anew.

On the eve of the shoot, an unexpected visitor arrives on the busy set, forcing Bessem to confront his past..
